| What is Humans Vs Zombies?
Humans vs. Zombies (HvZ) is a game of moderated tag commonly played on college campuses. A group of human players attempts to survive a “zombie outbreak” by outsmarting a growing group of zombie players. To make sure both sided remain active; either either sides may be given missions to complete. These missions can vary in location, objective, time limit and start/end time.
History
Brad Sappington and Chris Weed at Goucher College invented Humans vs. Zombies in 2005. In the U.S., HvZ is played at Goucher College, Bates College, University of Maryland at College Park, SUNY Potsdam, Ohio University, Butler University, University of Pittsburgh, New College of Florida, Rochester Institute of Technology, Alfred University, Bowling Green State University, Hamilton College, Northern Michigan University, Truman State University, Northern Illinois University, University of Massachusetts, Ball State University, Kansas State University, Pennsylvania State University, Franklin & Marshall College, Union College, Florida Institute of Technology, Bridgewater State College, Connecticut College, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Puget Sound, Whitman College, Henderson State University, Berea College, Ithaca College, Indiana Wesleyan University, Bard College at Simon’s Rock, Seton Hall University, Kutztown University, and dozens colleges and high schools across the country. HvZ is played on military bases and at summer camps, and has now spread to five continent. Schools now play in Canada, England, Australia, Korea and Brazil – the rules have been translated into Portugese! The game has been profiled by the Associated Press, the Washington Post, ESPN Magazine, HDNet Cable, and a number of college papers including the Goucher Quindecim. National Zombie Day was created by Brandon Mendelson of SUNY Potsdam to help promote the game, and today, it marks a common starting date for many schools’ HVZ games.
